Nepal Floodwater Reaches Bihar, Water Flow Rises At Gandak Barrage

Valmikinagar: The effect of the massive flood in Nepal is now visible in Bihar also. Late Wednesday night, flood water from Nepal reached Gandak Barrage, Valmikinagar. According to the Water Resources Department, an increase of about 20 thousand cusecs was recorded in the water flow at the barrage till around 8:30 pm.

The department estimates that the water flow may reach its peak by 11 pm. After this the water pressure is likely to reduce. According to officials, the maximum water flow in Gandak river can reach around two lakh cusecs.

How much did the water flow increase at Gandak Barrage?

According to the Water Resources Department, the water flow at Gandak Barrage increased by about 20 thousand cusecs till around 8:30 pm on Wednesday night. Following the flash flood in the upper catchment area of Nepal, the water level of the river is being continuously monitored.

However, the department says that at present the possible maximum water flow is expected to remain within the range of normal conditions.

Is there a possibility of less water in Gandak river this time than before?

The maximum water flow of 2,24,000 cusecs was recorded in the Gandak river on July 14 this year. At the same time, in the year 2024, on September 28, the water flow in the river had increased to 5,62,500 cusecs.

Compared to these figures, the possible maximum water flow this time is expected to be much less. Despite this, the administration is not showing any negligence.

Is there any danger to Gandak Barrage and embankments?

At present, officials have not said about any major threat, but special surveillance is being kept on barrages, embankments and control rooms. Officers and employees have been kept in alert mode.

In view of the flood situation in Nepal, Bihar government has increased vigilance in the concerned districts. Deputy Chief Minister cum Water Resources Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary said that information about the water flow coming from Nepal is being continuously collected.

He said that the government has made complete preparations to deal with the possible situation and the concerned officials have been instructed to be prepared for every situation.

The Water Resources Department has appealed to the people to remain alert instead of panicking. The administration has said that people should not pay attention to rumours and only trust the official information issued by government departments and administration.
